Sabit Ekin, Aly I. RF-Based Location Determination In Heterogeneous Sensor Networks


Today, wireless sensor networks have become a key technology for different types of "smart environments", and an intensive research effort is currently under way to enable the application of wireless sensor networks for a wide range of industrial problems. The need for a cost-effective means for sensor localization eliminates a variety of options including GPS. Several approaches are available to determine the location of the sensor nodes. Most of these algorithms require extra hardware resulting in higher costs that is not feasible for large networks. In this book, an RF-based localization approach is presented that utilizes particle filters. Due to the availability cheap wireless transmitters with received signal strength indicators, the proposed approach provides an effective solution to the challenging problem of localization. A prediction algorithm is designed to overcome the complications caused by fast fluctuations in the received signal power due to the propagation channel. Particle filters are then utilized to estimate the position of the sensors. A major development that has been presented in this book leads to significant increase in the positioning accuracy.

RF interferometric sensors are attractive for various sensing applications that require every fine resolution and accuracy as well as fast speed. The book also presents two millimeter-wave interferometric sensors realized using RF integrated circuits. The developed millimeter-wave homodyne sensor shows sub-millimeter resolution in the order of 0.05 mm without correction for the non-linear phase response of the sensor's quadrature mixer. The designed millimeter-wave double-channel homodyne sensor provides a resolution of only 0.01 mm, or 1/840th of the operating wavelength, and can inherently suppress the non-linearity of the sensor's quadrature mixer. Spectrum estimation of complex signals using RF and GDF(MGD &PGD)has been proposed.It is proved that pole or zero of a complex systems can be uniquely determined by RF approach.The concept of analytical signal spectrum estimation based on RF and GDF has been presented.It is shown that even at low SNR Spectrum of analytical signals can be clearly estimated with high resolution.The concept of RF has been extended to estimate the spectral components of 1st&2nd order dynamical systems.The concept of estimating wind profiles based on RF and GDF has been proposed.To check the superiority of RF results obtained based on the RF & GDF have been compared with that of CF.

RFID tag location in a 3D environment is investigated. The location of the tag with unknown coordinates can be estimated with certain accuracy. However, accuracy can be improved using the knowledge based on measurement of additional reference tags with known location. This book studies the mathematical formulation and practical realization of location sensing using RFID tags. Deviating from the standard use of RFID technology which employs one tag reader to identify presence of tag, multiple tag reader with known location are used to estimate the physical location of an individual tag, with/without the help of few reference tag with known location. Additionally, concept of trilateration has also been extended for tracking the tag on unknown location without use of reference tags. It was demonstrated that both approaches were proved to be cost-effective technique and estimation of the location of a specific tag has been achieve with sufficient accuracy.

Joydeep Acharya Heterogeneous Networks in LTE-Advanced


A comprehensive summary of theoretical and practical developments in LTE Heterogeneous Networks The last decade has witnessed the proliferation of mobile broadband data and the trend is likely to increase in the coming years. Current cellular networks are ill equipped to deal with this surge in demand. To satisfy user demand and maximize profits, a new paradigm to operate networks is needed. Heterogeneous networks, that deploy an overlay of small cells with limited coverage and transmit power, over a macro coverage area is the solution by providing capacity and coverage where it is needed. This book presents a comprehensive overview of small cell based heterogeneous networks within the framework of 3GPP LTE-Advanced which is the major enabler of current and future heterogeneous networks. The book first establishes the basics of LTE standards 8 -10. Wherever relevant, the underlying theory of wireless communications is explained and the signaling and protocol aspects of LTE Releases 8-10 are presented. Next the book presents a systematic study of the inter cell interference (eICIC and FeICIC) mechanisms that have been standardized in LTE releases 10 and 11 to mitigate the interference arising in heterogeneous networks. From simple blank subframe design and implementation, the book discusses more advanced transceiver signal processing and carrier aggregation (CA) based mechanisms to improve performance. Besides data, control channel enhancements such as enhanced PDCCH (ePDCCH) are also discussed. Subsequently the book discusses the possibility of base stations being allowed to coordinate to manage interference. This technique, called CoMP, has the potential of vastly improving network performance. However several practical challenges first have to be overcome before this potential can be realized. The book presents the different CoMP categories introduced in LTE release 11, the required signal processing and the changes that were introduced in Release-11 for supporting CoMP. The book then presents the state of the art developments in heterogeneous networks that are currently taking place in 3GPP with the initiation of Release 12. A whole array of new technologies have been introduced such as dynamic switching of small cells, new carrier types with reduced control signaling, dynamic reconfiguration of TDD-LTE, joint configuration of TDD and FDD via carrier aggregation and lastly advanced MIMO signal processing with three dimensional beamforming. All these technologies will work in unison leading to efficient operations of small cells. The authors thus comprehensively summarize the advances in heterogeneous networks over the last couple of years as reflected in various LTE releases and then look ahead at what to expect in the future. Capillary phenomena occur in both natural and human-made systems, from equilibria in the presence of solids (grains, walls, metal wires) to multiphase flows in heterogeneous and fractured porous media. This book, composed of two volumes, develops fluid mechanics approaches for two immiscible fluids (water/air or water/oil) in the presence of solids (tubes, joints, grains, porous media). Their hydrodynamics are typically dominated by capillarity and viscous dissipation. This first volume presents the basic concepts and investigates two-phase equilibria, before analyzing two-phase hydrodynamics in discrete and/or statistical systems (tubular pores, planar joints). It then studies flows in heterogeneous and stratified porous media, such as soils and rocks, based on Darcy’s law. Combinatorial auctions are auctions in which each bid can be placed on a set of items, as opposed to standard auctions, in which each bid is placed on a single item. The winner determination problem for combinatorial auctions is known to be NP-complete. One of the approaches to cope with the hardness of the problem is to identify tractable classes of combinatorial auctions by means of hypertree decompositions. The winner determination problem is tractable on the class of instances with corresponding dual hypergraphs having hypertree width bounded by a fixed natural number. This book describes an optimal algorithm, called ComputeSetPackingK, for solving the winner determination problem based on these ideas. The algorithm was implemented, and experimental results are also presented.
